Stefan Gates contributes the foreword to our new cookbook, “Food for Friendship,” along with a delicious recipe, below.
What a brilliant book. There are few better gifts you can give to a child than to simply cook with them, so a book like this, which aims to get children and adults cooking together, is fantastic.

When you cook with kids they get your attention, they get a sense of responsibility and self-worth, they gain a fascination with food that will hopefully lead them to a happier, healthier life, and to top it all, everyone gets to eat! Just don’t let anyone put their fingers in the hand-blender and then turn it on… like I did. Take it from me: cooking on telly with a massive bandage around your finger makes you look like a right wally.

I like my food to be fun and adventurous, so I particularly love the cheese pudding, beef soufflé, marmalade chicken and homemade pot noodle in this book. But best of all, it doesn’t fall into the usual trap of kids’ cookbooks which stick to cake-baking and cheese on toast. This baby’s got it all: brulees, parcels and top knots. Rock on!

Stefan’s Bum Sandwich

This is a way to make even the most mundane sandwich into an adventure. Just wrap your sarnie up in a few layers of clingfilm and sit on it for a while. There’s a decent scientific basis for this: the sandwich will warm up to body temperature, towards 37° celsius, and therefore its flavours will be more pronounced. Oh, and the squishing action helps ingredients to meld together. Feels naughty, but tastes great.

  1. 2 slices of fresh bread
  2. Butter
  3. Cheddar cheese (grated)
  4. Parmesan cheese (grated)
  5. Basil leaves
  6. Rocket leaves
  7. Olive oil
  8. Clingfilm

Lay the bread out and spread with plenty of butter. Add the fillings and then wrap in several layers of clingfilm. Sit on it for 10 minutes, or longer if you can mange it. Open and enjoy!
